The Big Potato

The Big PotatoIn 1977, local potato grower Jim Mauger of Robertson, New South Wales had a “big” idea. He created the “Big Potato” from concrete and modeled it after the Sebago potato as a promotional attraction and placed it prominently at the eastern end of the main street in Robertson. Measuring approximately 10 metres long and four metres wide, the potato would be used as a means of attracting attention to the fertile potato growing area known as the “Green Heart of the Southern Highlands.€ The thought was to use this hollow structure as a Potato Information Centre, but due to rising costs this dream was not realised. The Maugers admitted they may have taken on too much in their endeavor as maintaining a cattle business as well as their attention to the tourism venue proved to be more time-consuming than they had anticipated.
By 2005, the €œBig Potato€ showed signs of wear, neglect, and even vandalism. Efforts were made in 2008 by the Maugers, the Chamber of Commerce, and many volunteers to clean up the spud. Access to the inside was blocked by cementing over the doors (to prevent further vandalism), the outside was pressure cleaned, and a fresh coat of paint was added. There were also flowers planted around the potato to make it more attractive. Then in March of 2010 a group of young people once again took aim at the potato. Residents of Robertson awoke to see the potato had obtained two large eyes, a nose, and mouth overnight all made of paper mache. This plan had been calculated as a surprise to brighten up the potato for the local agricultural show. But vandals quickly tore down the additions to the potato by the next evening. People were disappointed the artwork had been removed.
The addition of the face to the potato has since drummed up positive attention to the town and its icon. Those responsible for the face had been asked to recreate their work over several weekends. It has become an attraction for tourists and locals, and has prompted people to stop for photographs. The Chamber of Commerce has been supportive of these efforts to rebuild a positive image of their potato once called, €œthe local turd. More »
